Charity Spotlight: Women’s Refuge

In my charity spotlight this month, I am featuring the women’s refuge.

The Women’s Refuge is New Zealand’s largest nation-wide organisation that supports and helps women and children experiencing family violence. Their vision is for all women and children in Aotearoa to live free from domestic and family violence.

They are an incredible organisation that have helped thousands of women and children in New Zealand escape domestic/family violence. Sadly, New Zealand has one of the highest domestic violence rates in the OECD. 1 in 3 New Zealand women will experience physical and/or sexual partner abuse in their lifetime. I don’t know about you guys, but I think this is absolutely appalling and so heartbreaking.

The Women’s refuge have a range of support and resources for women experiencing family violence:

  • 24/7 crisis helpline - 0800 REFUGE or 0800 733 843

  • Refuge/housing accommodation for women and children

  • Education programmes

  • They conduct their own research into DV/FV

Women’s refuge also aim to spread awareness about the impact on family/domestic violence on children; it literally changes neurological processes in their brain - changing the way children act, think, and feel for the rest of their lives.

The Women’s refuge is an amazing organisation, but they need your help!
